That's right everybody, they will soon be Chinese tires.

I always liked putting Pirelli's on my Jag, guess I'll be switching to Continental or Michelin.

People seem to forget that their latest iGadgets are usually made in China as well.

Yup scratch those from the list.
![]() 03/25/2015 at 13:50 |

I still don't trust them with anything automotive related.
![]() 03/25/2015 at 13:51 |

no worries, they'll just copy every other great tire out there. Its a china thing.

Most components of most all consumer electronics are indeed made in China. But if you look at the current tire offerings whose origins trace back to China, you'll see many things but quality is not one of them.

Wow looks like I'll have to keep buying Michelin like I already have been.
![]() 03/25/2015 at 13:52 |

So...we should expect the tires in F1 to be even worse than they have been in recent years?
![]() 03/25/2015 at 13:53 |

I sense an impending second PirelliTMChinese GP to replace the cancelledGerman one, because it's not like there are any successful germans in F1 right now.

Well....fuck.

"...as a result of buying Pirelli condoms this week, he now has 17 children."

How bad could it be?

Have you looked at where a huge percentage of your car parts were sourced from?
![]() 03/25/2015 at 14:04 |

Most of mine are Japan or US, actually. I don't use cheap parts on the MR2.
The wagon on the other hand......
![]() 03/25/2015 at 14:05 |

Oh yeah, I know that yours are. Same applies to my 2, but on any car made in the last fifteen years or so?

Unsure if joking...

Pretty sure I'm joking.
But would it would be hard to be surprised if Ol' Bernie started spouting about how China is a giant country with a big car market, of and hey they own our title sponsor! Before you know it, we're watching the Shanghai GP in April and the Hong Kong GP in July.

manufacturing small plastic and cheap electronic parts from China is a lot different than the company designing and innovating products. Tires are getting very scientific. Also if my coil fails my car doesn't potentially crash. Tires are far too important to have the Chinese involved, and let's be honest. If Pirelli is selling to a Chinese company nothing good can come from it. Pirelli? Obviously they need money and are already hurting and a Chinese company will exploit that to gain off the customer, they bought Pirelli to make money.
I feel pirelli is already way behind and frankly so is everyone that is not Michelin. New tires like the super sport are nearly untouchable and doing dual duty.
This would 100% stop me from buying a Pirelli tire, the QC alone is reason enough.

There's no evidence that the factories are moving, or that (aside from the change in chairman of the board) the management structure is changing. This is an ownership change, and really many of the product quality decisions are made at the management level. Is management beholden to owners (including the many public shareholders)? Of course. But, this giant freakout about a change in the geographic location of a primary owner of a global firm is both ignorant of the nature of ownership in a global economy and nationalist to the point of borderline xenophobia.
Pirelli is still Pirelli.

HK would have to be a street circuit and is very Blade Runner-esque, soooo.... I'm fine with that!
![]() 03/25/2015 at 14:18 |

Yeah, i think that Pirelli are kind of crap for the most part. I like Michelin, Dunlop, and Goodyear, personally.

Oh I'm sure it would be awesome, and it's not like I would bitch about a second US GP, but if we have to lose places like Germany with 100 years of GP racing history for that to happen (instead of say, a rich ass emirate or two) I'd be pretty sad.

Yes, but when my igadget inevitably shits the bed after 2-3 years of use I just go buy another one. Not go careening into on coming traffic or a tree.

Yeah, I can't wait for Bernie and CVC to be gone. Unfortunately, I don't know who could take FOM other than another venture capital group. The FIA can't afford to buy it back and can't anyway because of antitrust regulations.

Get Leno and Clarkson and some other rich car guys, join forces with Jalopnik, buy 'em out, put Stef in charge. Easy.

yes, and I don't believe any parts were sourced from China for the Focus ST.
![]() 03/25/2015 at 15:00 |

Actually, I don't think any of the parts for the Focus ST were sourced from China. I'm not talking about dumb little plastic pieces either.
Ford used to get their transmissions for the Mustang from China. They went boom. That and the whole bad airbag recalls, can't remember what manufacturer that was. I could go on.

Pretty sure this will be more like Jaguar/Land Rover being bought out by Tata, or Volvo being bought by Geely. They still make things in their original countries, but have more money to develop their products. (Although some Volvos are now built in China.)

Takata are Japanese, but the airbags in question were made in Mexico.

I use to run some pirelli's about 10 years ago but I'm pretty much a Michelin man at this point. The super sport is barely off the best streetable tire in the dry and that smallest am off grip in wet on the best wet tires (granted if you are going through a lot of huge standing water nothing beats a real water tire with all the siping however you then give up grip in other wet areas that do not have standing water where say an emergency maneuver is needed). Combined with the price they are the ultimate tire IMO and the new cup 2 tire is unbeatable, I'm sure you'll see it on the new gt3rs. Vw has some dunlops and OB has some Conti's. I feel not only is Michelin whooping it up on the street especially for the price they are also beating brands even like Conti on the race track. The main thing for me is even their grippy tires give you a ton of feel without being harsh. They are superior to the re050/1, re70, as well.
I one time asked the ALMS announcers while everytime ALMS came to Laguna Seca the drivers interviewed talked about how they loved the circuit blah blah blah and every time Grand Am guys came they moaned the track was too slippery and had no grip. He said it was the tires and Michelin has dominated the Le mans series.
The most interesting set of tires from Michelin I have driven on is XWX, a vintage tire that is made with one production run per year in france from the original tire molds. They are on our c2 corvette but were standard on Ferrari's, Maserati and a couple others in the 60's

I get Toyos for my Z, I'm ok. Pirelli should never be Chinese, its a part of Italian automotive heritage.
